ABOUT JOE MADODA SIBANYONI (JOE FERRARI)
Joe Madoda Sibanyoni, popularly known as Joe Ferrari, is a South African entrepreneur, transport industry leader, author, mentor, and survivor whose life journey reflects discipline, faith, endurance, and transformational leadership.
Born in March 1966 in rural KwaNdebele, South Africa, Joe was raised by Steven and Nokufa Sibanyoni in a modest household shaped by strong moral values, spiritual grounding, and the principles of ubuntu—humanity, respect, and collective responsibility. His upbringing instilled in him the belief that dignity is built through service, discipline, and consistency rather than privilege or circumstance.
From an early age, Joe was introduced to responsibility through his father’s work in the informal transport sector. He began his journey as a taxi driver before transitioning into ownership and leadership. Through patience, strategy, and emotional discipline, he gradually built a respected presence in one of South Africa’s most competitive and high-pressure industries.
Unlike many who rise in similar environments, Joe became widely known for choosing structure over chaos, governance over aggression, and long-term sustainability over short-term gain. His leadership style prioritised order, negotiation, and systems-building within a sector often defined by conflict and instability.
In 2007, Joe survived the first assassination attempt in which he was shot thirteen times. Rather than seeking revenge, he chose forgiveness—an act that redefined his purpose and leadership. His survival became a symbol of resilience and moral strength, reinforcing his belief that power taken by violence is never lasting. He regards the taxi industry not merely as a business but as a moral and spiritual battleground that requires integrity, courage, and restraint.
The COVID-19 pandemic brought significant disruption to his operations, halting mobility and affecting livelihoods across the transport sector. During this period of forced reflection, Joe redirected his focus toward legacy, storytelling, and mentorship. This introspection led to the creation of his book, “Becoming Joe Ferrari”, a deeply personal account of pain, survival, transformation, and spiritual growth.
Today, Joe is recognised not only as a business figure but as a mentor and community builder, actively engaged in guiding young entrepreneurs and supporting social upliftment initiatives. His influence extends beyond transport into leadership development, personal transformation, and ethical business practice.
He strongly rejects exaggerated narratives of wealth or status, choosing instead to define success through impact, peace of mind, and the positive transformation of others. His leadership philosophy is rooted in lived experience rather than theory—shaped by hardship, resilience, and continuous reinvention.
Guided by faith and ancestral identity, the name “Madoda”, meaning “many men”, symbolizes collective responsibility, generational legacy, and the weight of representing those who came before and those yet to come.
Joe’s life embodies a central truth he often reflects upon:
“Legacy is not what you accumulate, but what you leave behind in people.”
Mr Sibanyoni holds the following positions
- President of SALLDTBO
- President Joe Sibanyoni Foundation.
- Chairman SANTACO Trading (Pty) Ltd trading as TaxiChoice. TaxiChoice is the business arm of SANTACO.
