Bouwer will also deliver a high-profile keynote address at the Clevenard Open Project 2026, scheduled for 27–30 August 2026 at the Palacio de Congresos Alicante.

  • Keynote Address – Day 3 (29 August 2026)
  • Topic: Women, Culture & Global Leadership: Building Inclusive Societies Through Media, Policy & the Arts

About Dr Carol Bouwer

Dr Carol Bouwer is a distinguished speaker, media producer, businesswoman, cultural custodian, and human rights advocate whose career has influenced generations across South Africa and beyond. Known for her integrity, forthright leadership, and commitment to elevating women, she has built an extraordinary legacy at the intersection of media, entrepreneurship, policy, and social impact.

Her career began in television as a presenter and actor before becoming one of the first and most iconic hosts of Motswako, a groundbreaking women’s talk show that ran for 21 seasons on SABC2. Through Motswako, she amplified conversations on women’s empowerment, leadership, health, safety, gender equality, and social justice, making her a household name and a trusted voice for millions.

Leadership in Women’s Empowerment & Cultural Development

Through Dr Carol Bouwer Productions, she has created influential platforms to honour women’s contributions to culture and society. The most notable is the Mbokodo Awards, launched in 2012, which celebrates women who show leadership and strengthen society through the arts. Bouwer believes that women are custodians of culture and heritage, shaping the identity of future generations.

Her annual women’s entrepreneurship platform, The African Odyssey (now in its fifth year), connects young women in business to global opportunities. Her advocacy also led her to chair a women’s forum in Parliament in 2008, where she championed anti-bullying and anti-drug legislation in South African schools.

Humanitarian & Global Advocacy Work

Dr Carol’s humanitarian leadership has been recognised globally. She has served on the board of the Amy Foundation, worked closely with Thuthuzela Women Centres, and partnered with USAID on projects supporting women facing abuse. In 2018, she was appointed UNICEF South Africa Special Advocate for Women and Children, facilitating high-level engagements with policymakers, private sector leaders, and international organisations.

Through her work with UN Women’s Generation Equality programme, she helped elevate Black and disadvantaged women artists globally, including curating a high-profile art showcase in New York in 2021 that raised millions for women creators.

Creative Impact & Luxury Entrepreneurship

Carol is also the founder of CB Bags, a premium luxury handbag line manufactured in Cape Town using ethically sourced wildlife materials in alignment with CITES standards. The brand opened its first boutique at the prestigious One&Only Hotel in Cape Town and has featured collaborations with globally celebrated artist Dr Esther Mahlangu. Her passion for creative excellence has also informed her role as a former trustee of the Norval Foundation Museum, giving her deep insight into supporting artists from historically marginalised communities.

In 2024, she was appointed as a Director on the local and global board of SwopAnything.com, reflecting her influence in international business.

Dr Carol Bouwer’s unique combination of humanitarianism, entrepreneurship, cultural leadership, and media influence positions her as a transformative African icon—making her recognition at the Clevenard Global Award both timely and deeply significant.
