Bel Air, Seychelles – Residents are voicing outrage after a decades-old mango tree, estimated to be over 40 years old, was cut down this week to make way for parking space.
The tree, which had long provided shade, fruit, and clean air to families in the area, was felled in what many locals are calling an unnecessary act of destruction.
“This wasn’t progress — it was politics,” said one resident, criticizing the move as being motivated more by political showmanship than genuine community need.
Locals argue that the parking space created was not essential, and that the loss of the tree represents an environmental setback. “Concrete doesn’t give fruit. Asphalt doesn’t give oxygen,” another resident remarked.
Environmental advocates warn that once a mature tree like this is gone, it cannot be replaced overnight. “It takes decades to grow what was lost in minutes,” one activist noted.
The incident has reignited debate over development priorities in Seychelles, with critics urging decision-makers to balance infrastructure needs with environmental preservation.
