Mama Africa Foundation and Kono Feed Kono Combat the Deadly Drug Kush

January 2025 - Kono District, Sierra Leone: The Mama Africa Foundation, in collaboration with Kono Feed Kono, has aligned itself with the national fight against the deadly and self-destructive drug known as "Kush." The beloved "Sweet Salone" is grappling with a crisis that has grown significantly since 2019, demanding urgent attention.

What is Kush?

Kush is a synthetic drug created by spraying synthetic cannabinoids and/or nitazenes onto leaves, often marshmallow leaves. It first emerged in Sierra Leone in 2016 and has since spread to other West African countries, including Guinea, Liberia, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, and Senegal. The drug is cheap, potent, and dangerous, often mixed with tobacco and smoked by youths aged 20-35. Its effects are short-lived, typically lasting between 5 to 30 minutes, but its impact on individuals and communities is devastating.

Why the Urgent Call?

On April 4, 2024, Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio declared a national emergency over drugs, citing the devastating effects of Kush. The drug has caused numerous deaths and destroyed countless lives. Mama Africa Foundation recognizes this crisis and has stepped in with initiatives aimed at rebuilding lives and creating a brighter future for affected youths.

Initiatives by Mama Africa Foundation and Kono Feed Kono

  • Engaging influencers and experts to teach, interact with, and support Kush victims.
  • Establishing community-based centers to rehabilitate affected individuals through skills training, counseling, and employment opportunities.
  • Promoting awareness through music, storytelling, and climate-friendly initiatives.
  • Providing medical and educational support, including scholarships for vulnerable children and donations to hospitals.
  • Encouraging self-sufficiency through agriculture and organic farming.

Future Plans

The Mama Africa Foundation plans to construct a "Worked City Home" on a 20-acre land in Kono District. This facility will serve as a vocational training center for Kush victims and other vulnerable individuals, empowering them with skills and opportunities to rebuild their lives. The project requires heavy funding, and the foundation appeals for support from donors, volunteers, and experts to bring this vision to life.
