UN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDGs) - (PART TWO)

UN SDGs

- GOAL 4 (QUALITY EDUCATION)

Great strides have been made since the year 2000 to achieve the goal of Universal Primary Education. In 2015, the total school admission rate for developing regions of the world had approached 91%; while the number of children across the world who left school declined by half. Remarkable increment in literacy rates and more girl children going to school than ever before were also recorded. These are commendable reports received from all over the world.
However, this has not been the case in some developing countries of the world. Times have been hard on the people, because of growing high poverty rates, violent crimes against humanity and their attendant consequences.

In North Africa and Western Asia, the number of children out of school has been on the increase, due to inherent armed conflict. It is indeed, a disturbing situation. Although Sub-Saharan Africa recorded incremental levels of growth in primary school admission among all developing countries - from 52% in 1990, up to 78% in 2012 - there have been great regrettable differences between them. It was observed that children coming from the deprived homes are over four times more probably, school drop-out than the children emerging from well -endowed homes. Again, great differences exist between rural and urban communities for children of school-going age, who are out of school.

Attaining the goal of all-inclusive and quality education in all regions across the world reiterates our conviction that education forms one effective and important conduit for sustainable development in the world. This goal echoes the target of ensuring that all boys and girls of school-going age attain the height of achieved free primary and secondary education by the year 2030.

Additionally, it is targeted at providing equal rights and access to affordable skill training, to remove gender-based inequalities in the society and attain the greatest height of success in quality education.

UN SDGs

- GOAL 7 (AFFORDABLE AND CLEAN ENERGY)

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) - Goal 7 aims at ensuring that the following are achieved by the year 2030:

Firstly, that universal access to affordable, reliable and modern energy services are available.

Secondly, that there is substantial increase in the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.

Thirdly, doubling the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency.

In addition, by the year 2030, there will be enhanced international cooperation to facilitate easy access to clean energy research and technology, including renewable energy, energy efficiency and advanced and cleaner fossil-fuel technology, and promote investment in energy infrastructure and clean energy technology.

Lastly, the expansion of infrastructure and upgrading of technology for supplying modern and sustainable energy services for all, in developing countries, in particular least developed countries, small island developing States, and land-locked developing countries, in accordance with their respective programs of support.

UN SDGs

- GOAL 9 (INDUSTRY, INNOVATION AND INFRASTRUCTURE)
This goal aims at attaining the following:

First of all, to develop quality, reliable, sustainable and resilient infrastructure, including regional and trans-border infrastructure, to support economic development and human well-being, with a focus on affordable and equitable access for all.

Again, to promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and, significantly raise industry's share of employment and gross domestic product, in line with national circumstances, and double its share in least developed countries by the year 2030.

In addition to the above, to increase the access of small-scale industrial and other enterprises, in particular in developing countries, to financial services, including affordable credit, and their integration into value chains and markets.

By the year 2030, to upgrade infrastructure and retrofit industries to make them sustainable, with increased resource-use efficiency and greater adoption of clean and environmentally sound technologies and industrial processes, with all countries taking action in accordance with their respective capabilities.

To enhance scientific research, upgrade the technological capabilities of industrial sectors in all countries, in particular developing countries, including encouraging innovation and substantially increasing the number of research and development workers per 1 million people and public and private research and development spending.

Another aim of the SDGs - goal 9 is to facilitate sustainable and resilient infrastructure development in developing countries through enhanced financial, technological and technical support to African countries, least developed countries, landlocked developing countries and small island developing States.

This goal also aims at supporting domestic technology development, research and innovation in developing countries, including by ensuring a conducive policy environment for, inter alia, industrial diversification and value addition to commodities.

Finally, significantly increase access to information and communications technology and strive to provide universal and affordable access to the Internet in least developed countries.
