Public Lecture, Book Presentation, and 90th Birthday Anniversary of Prof. S.J.S. Cookey ll 9th April 2024
The Auditorium, CBN center of excellence, University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Tuesday April 9th 2024, was packed full as Professors, former colleagues, captains of industries, family, friends, and well-wishers gathered to mark the 90th birthday of the second Vice-Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt Distinguished Professor Sylvanus John Sodienye Cookey.
The day was also set aside for the delivery of a public lecture titled “The Historian, Public Service, and the Colossal Footmarks of Prof. Sodienye Cookey at 90 Years” and presentation of a book titled “A Torchbearer for all seasons; SJS Cookey and the times by Dianam Peresuo Dianam.
The guest lecturer Ambassador Godknows Igali acknowledged the level of precision that Professor Cookey came to be associated with by virtue of his work at the University of Port Harcourt while the book reviewer Professor Emmanuel Emasealu said the book provided a comprehensive overview of Professor Cookey’s life and leagacies and highlighted his resilience, commitment to education, and dedication to serving his community and the nation.
Former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan who delivered his address electronically said he recalled Professor Cookey as a diligent and dedicated University administrator at the same time he was pursuing post graduate studies at the University of Port Harcourt.
An address by the Government and people of Rivers State delivered by the State’s Deputy Governor Dr. Ngozi Odu described Professor Cookey as a selfless Nigerian, selfless Niger - Deltan, and a proud and wonderful son of Rivers State.
Professor Cookey replying to the several encomiums showered on him simply said “I feel fulfilled. Having left this University for over three decades people still remember what one has done and contributed to the growth and development of this University".
