Her participation recognises the vital role that experienced community leaders, traditional health practitioners and grassroots advocates play in advancing public health, social inclusion and lasting community transformation.

NANA ANGEL MAKHANYA

Community Development Practitioner | Traditional Health Practitioner | Broadcaster | Social Development Specialist

Nana Angel Makhanya’s career reflects a lifelong commitment to education, health advocacy, traditional healthcare, behavioural change and community empowerment. Her work has connected government departments, healthcare institutions, traditional leadership, non-governmental organisations, community media and development partners throughout South Africa.

From supporting learners with hearing disabilities to developing HIV/AIDS education programmes and advocating for collaboration between traditional and formal healthcare systems, she has consistently worked to bring information, services and support closer to the communities that need them.

Her professional journey demonstrates the importance of combining practical knowledge, cultural understanding and community participation to address complex social challenges.

A PIONEER IN COMMUNITY HEALTH AND HIV/AIDS EDUCATION

One of Nana Angel Makhanya’s significant contributions began in 1993, when she initiated an HIV/AIDS programme at Howick Clinic. The programme focused on awareness, education, prevention and community support during the early years of the HIV/AIDS epidemic response.

Her subsequent work involved counselling, psychosocial support, outreach and education initiatives serving communities affected by HIV/AIDS and related public health challenges.

She also participated in regional HIV/AIDS study visits and community programme initiatives involving South African delegates in countries including Zambia, Uganda, Kenya, Zimbabwe and other African settings, according to her professional profile.

These experiences contributed to her understanding of the importance of community education, collaboration and culturally responsive approaches to public health.

BRIDGING TRADITIONAL HEALING AND FORMAL HEALTHCARE

A defining chapter in Nana Angel Makhanya’s career came in 1999, when she became one of the first two Traditional Health Practitioners appointed to the National Department of Health’s Traditional Healers Programme Unit.

In this role, she contributed to the training and development of traditional health practitioners and to the development of national HIV/AIDS, TB and STI training materials for traditional health practitioners.

Her work supported dialogue around the relationship between traditional health systems and formal healthcare services, recognising the importance of culturally informed education and cooperation in community health initiatives.

She also presented a paper on “Truth & Tradition” at the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Cape Town in 1999 and participated in conferences on alternative healing and complementary medicine in South Africa.

Her experience offers an important perspective on how traditional knowledge, community trust and public health education can contribute to broader development conversations.

EDUCATION, MENTORSHIP AND COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT

Nana Angel Makhanya began her professional career at Indaleni School for the Deaf, where she worked as a teacher and librarian from 1985 to 1992. Her responsibilities included supporting sign-language orientation and establishing and resourcing the school library.

She later served at Midlands Community College, working in student welfare, community liaison, vocational training and life-skills development.

Throughout her career, she has supported learning, mentorship, behavioural change, facilitation and skills development across different community and organisational settings.

Her qualifications and training include education and participatory development, facilitation, assessment and moderation, HIV/AIDS counselling, home-based care, human rights response, advocacy and applied management techniques.

This diverse foundation has enabled her to contribute to initiatives addressing education, health, social development and community resilience.

A RESPECTED VOICE IN COMMUNITY BROADCASTING

From 2006 to 2024, Nana Angel Makhanya was associated with Umgungundlovu Community Radio as a co-founder, programme and production manager, and presenter.

Through community broadcasting, she helped deliver educational and public-interest content addressing issues affecting families and local communities.

Her broadcasting and voice-over experience strengthened her ability to communicate complex issues in accessible ways, engage diverse audiences and use media as a tool for awareness, education and empowerment.

Her work demonstrates how community media can connect people with information, encourage dialogue and support positive social change.
