Bill Oddie Remembered in Seychelles Following News of His Passing

Victoria, Seychelles – News of the passing of beloved British actor, comedian, broadcaster, and renowned wildlife conservationist Bill Oddie at the age of 85 has prompted heartfelt tributes from around the world. In Seychelles, memories of his memorable visit to the islands in 1985 have resurfaced, celebrating both his warmth as a person and his enduring passion for nature.

Among those reflecting on his visit is Ambassador Alain St.Ange, who had the privilege of meeting Bill Oddie during his stay at the Reef Hotel in May 1985. At the time, St.Ange served as the hotel's Marketing Manager and Executive Assistant Manager.

"It was an honour to meet Bill Oddie and spend time with him during his stay in Seychelles," recalled Ambassador Alain St.Ange. "He immediately impressed everyone with his approachable nature, genuine kindness, and wonderful sense of humour. Although he was in Seychelles to film one of his wildlife programmes and pursue his lifelong passion for birdlife rather than perform comedy, his infectious wit and cheerful personality shone through in every conversation. He was truly a remarkable man whose love for nature was as inspiring as his talent for entertaining audiences."

Bill Oddie rose to international fame as one-third of the iconic British comedy trio behind the acclaimed television series The Goodies, which aired for nine seasons and 76 episodes between 1970 and 1982. Following his successful comedy career, he became one of Britain's most respected wildlife broadcasters and conservation advocates, presenting popular BBC programmes including Birding with Bill Oddie, Springwatch, and numerous documentaries that inspired generations to appreciate and protect the natural world.

His visit to Seychelles reflected that lifelong commitment to wildlife, with the islands' exceptional biodiversity and rich birdlife providing the perfect setting for his filming and exploration.

The memories of Bill Oddie's time in Seychelles have been preserved in Alain St.Ange – My Journey, where page 632 features souvenir photographs of Bill Oddie alongside Alain St.Ange, taken in the grounds of the Reef Hotel during his 1985 visit.
