The honorary recognition will be formally presented on Sunday, 30 August 2026, during the Clevenard Global Awards – 3rd Edition 2026, the flagship awards ceremony of the Clevenard Open Project. Held alongside the International Fashion Runway, the ceremony celebrates outstanding global leaders whose contributions have created lasting impact across education, culture, governance, and community development.

In addition to receiving this distinguished honour, Professor Nxumalo will deliver a keynote address on Day 1 of the event during the Global Authors’ Recognition & Education Summit, where he will share insights drawn from decades of leadership, scholarship, and cultural advocacy.

A Lifetime Dedicated to Education, Leadership and Cultural Preservation

Born in Louwsburg, Northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, to the late Ezrom Qedusizi Nxumalo and Gertrude Bonisile MaQwabe Nxumalo, Professor OEHM Nxumalo's life journey exemplifies academic excellence, perseverance, and service to humanity.

He began his educational journey at Louwsburg Primary School before obtaining a Lower Primary Teachers Certificate at St Joseph’s College, Inkamana, where he subsequently served as a teaching assistant. His professional career advanced rapidly, leading to appointments as an Inspector of Schools, Professor at the University of Zululand, and later Director-General in KwaZulu-Natal.

Driven by an unwavering commitment to lifelong learning, Professor Nxumalo pursued higher education primarily as a non-resident student, earning an impressive portfolio of academic qualifications including BA, BA Honours, MA (UNISA), BEd (University of Zululand), MPA, EdM, and EdD, with his final three degrees obtained from Harvard University. In recognition of his exceptional contribution to scholarship and society, he was also awarded an Honorary Doctor of Literature and Philosophy (D.Litt et Phil Honoris Causa) by the University of South Africa (UNISA).

His multidisciplinary academic background spans African Languages, Sociology, and Systematic Philosophy, reflecting a rare intellectual breadth that has shaped his contributions to education and public discourse. During his Master of Education studies, he specialized in Community Psychology and later served as a teaching assistant in the field.

While serving as an Adjunct Professor at Monmouth College in New Jersey, United States, Professor Nxumalo was commissioned to design and teach a pioneering course titled “Ethnicity and Cultural Pluralism.” The programme was created to prepare future leaders and policymakers to understand and appreciate cultural diversity, inclusion, and the value of multicultural societies.

Trusted Adviser to Traditional Leadership

For more than twelve years, Professor Nxumalo served as a speechwriter and trusted adviser to His Majesty King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu, one of Africa’s most respected traditional monarchs. During this period, he co-authored the King's biography, “King of Goodwill,” a significant contribution to the documentation of Zulu history and leadership.

He has also served on commissions dealing with traditional leadership and succession matters within the institution of Ubukhosi, providing expert guidance on cultural governance and heritage preservation.

Champion of the Zulu Language and African Heritage

Professor Nxumalo is widely recognised for his enduring contribution to Zulu literature, language development, and cultural preservation.

Among his notable works is “Inqolobane Yesizwe,” co-authored with the renowned Professor Sibusiso Nyembezi, an authoritative reference work on Zulu language and culture. He has also authored a Zulu protocol manual, published scholarly articles on the significance and functions of Izinduna (traditional headmen and headwomen), served on terminology development committees, and founded Inkazimulo, a pioneering Zulu-language newspaper.

Through his writings, scholarship, and public service, Professor Nxumalo has helped preserve indigenous knowledge systems while advancing African languages as vehicles for education, identity, and development.

A Well-Deserved Global Recognition

The Clevenard Honorary Award recognises individuals whose lives and work have contributed significantly to education, cultural preservation, leadership, and social transformation. Professor Nxumalo’s remarkable achievements, spanning academia, government service, traditional leadership, and literature, make him a deserving recipient of this international honour.

His recognition at the Clevenard Open Project 2026 underscores the importance of celebrating visionary leaders whose influence continues to inspire future generations across Africa and around the world.
