Born in George Brook Dworzark, Freetown, Umaru was raised in the Northern Province, where he developed a profound connection to both urban and rural cultural life. These experiences deeply shaped his artistic vision and storytelling approach, allowing him to authentically capture the richness of Sierra Leonean culture through drama and film.
Umaru’s academic journey at Milton Margai College of Education and Technology (now Milton Margai Technical University) strengthened both his creative and pedagogical foundations. He later became Director of Amazing Cultural Theatre, restaging Trouble Lovers at St. Francis Secondary School hall. Transitioning fully into film, he produced and directed impactful movies such as The Crying Orphans (lead actor and director) and Kohkoh (writer, director, and supporting actor), which exemplify his commitment to socially relevant and culturally grounded narratives.
In 2021, Umaru founded Amazing International Academy, an institution designed to merge education with creative arts development, nurturing future generations of storytellers and artists.
