Kathleen Bendelack: A Life in Storytelling, On Stage and Beyond
Kathleen Bendelack, a celebrated actress, playwright, and author, has made the Balearic Islands her creative home for more than two decades. Her profound love for theatre, writing, and film has cemented her place as a cultural innovator in the region.
Founder of Petite Production Company, now in its 10th year, Kathleen has staged both classic and original works across the Balearics. Her imaginative adaptations of literary icons like Shakespeare, the Brontë sisters, and Charles Dickens have introduced thousands—especially young audiences—to the transformative magic of live performance. Her signature style blends history and fantasy, humor and humanity, often laced with music and wonder.
Her recent production, Playing Dickens, featuring five actors and a musician, offered a whimsical yet emotional journey through the life of Charles Dickens. Up next is her bold reimagining of A Streetcar Named Desire, supported by Calvià Culture and set to premiere this November at the Calvià Auditorium.
Beyond theatre, Kathleen has written and directed several short films, including Escapism and Café Olé, the latter in collaboration with a fellow writer. She’s also developed a quirky TV comedy series, The Bendelack Sisters, inspired by the diverse lives of expatriates in Mallorca. With her trademark wit and cultural insight, she reflects the universality of human experience with a comedic edge.
As a published children’s author, Kathleen has written three storybooks, including bilingual Spanish-English editions. Her rhythmic storytelling and vivid characters captivate young readers and mirror her theatrical voice.
She is also a weekly columnist for The Mallorca Bulletin with her popular column From Palma with Love—a witty, heartfelt commentary on culture, films, directors, and “all that jazz.”
With a family connection to British comedy (her brother directed Mr. Bean’s Holiday), Kathleen carries a unique comedic flair. Yet, it is her commitment to purposeful storytelling—honest, humorous, and imaginative—that continues to make her a pillar in the Balearic arts scene.
Whether on stage, on screen, or in print, Kathleen Bendelack brings imagination to life and life to the arts.
