Africa Tourism Day and Africa Tourism Climate Action Forum (ATCAF) 2024: Tourism as a Key Industry Highlighted by Alain St.Ange at Africa Celebrates 2024 in Addis Ababa
Africa's tourism industry will succeed if we all work towards a welcoming approach with no ambiguities or complications," said Alain St.Ange, addressing the Africa Celebrates 2024 gathering in Addis Ababa.
A widely respected tourism expert on the continent, St.Ange took aim at Africa’s current visa protocols, suggesting that if revenue was the primary motivation behind these requirements, it may be time to consider embedding visa fees in air ticket costs. This, he argued, could eliminate the need for travelers to queue for formalities at airports, enhancing the experience for tourists. "It’s time to look at the big picture. Grow tourism and let the country and its people benefit," he urged.
St.Ange expressed pride in his role as a board member for the upcoming Africa Tourism Day and Africa Tourism Climate Action Forum (ATCAF) 2024, scheduled later in November in Nigeria, where he works closely with the organization’s President, Dr. Abigail Olagbaye of Nigeria. "We’re committed to ensuring the success of this event," he stated.
Speaking to the press after the forum, St.Ange highlighted the event's focus: "We’re here to celebrate our continent’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty, while addressing the urgent issue of climate change. By exploring the intersection of tourism, inclusion, and climate action, we recognize the potential of sustainable tourism to drive economic growth, create jobs, and promote cultural exchange. Our goal is to empower women and youth with green jobs and skills in areas like waste recycling, renewable energy, sustainable transport, sustainable agriculture, creative industries, tourism, and digital skills."
Reflecting on the preliminary session, St.Ange noted, "We engaged in meaningful discussions, solutions mapping, and networking. I am confident that our collective expertise and passion will create actionable pathways for Africa’s tourism development and climate action."
He concluded with a message of unity: "Thank you for joining us on this critical journey. Together, let’s harness the power of sustainable tourism to build a resilient, climate-conscious Africa."
