The Battle of Our Lives as a Team
The Battle of Our Lives as a Team: Can We Really Heal Together?
We might crumble step by step, play by play, until we're finished. Right now, we’re in a tough spot. Believe me, we can stay here and let adversity beat us down, or we can fight our way back into the light. We can climb out of this hole one step at a time.
I can't do it for you. But I look around and I see potential. I think about how I’ve made every wrong choice a person can make. I’ve squandered opportunities and pushed away loved ones, and lately, I can hardly stand to see my reflection in the mirror.
When you get older, you realize that life takes things from you. That's just part of the journey. You only learn this when you start losing things. You discover that life is a game of steps. So is football. In both, the margin for error is tiny. Half a step too late or too early, and you don't quite make it. Half a second too slow or too fast, and you miss it.
The steps we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break, every minute, every second. In our team, we fight for those steps. We tear ourselves and those around us apart for those steps. We claw with our fingernails for those steps because we know that when we add up all those steps, it makes the difference between winning and losing.
In any fight, it's the person who's willing to give everything who will win that step. And if I’m going to have any life left, it’s because I’m still willing to fight and die for that step. That's what living is: the six steps in front of your face.
I can’t make you do it. You’ve got to look at the person next to you, look into their eyes. I think you’re going to see someone who will go that step with you. You’re going to see someone who will sacrifice for the team because they know you will do the same for them.
That’s what a team is. Either we heal now as a team, or we will die as individuals. That’s all it is.
So, what are you going to do?
