Culture, defined as the embodiment of the way of life of a people, encompasses attitudes and behaviors that characterize specific communities, countries, social groups, or organizations.
In Nigeria, the significance of culture cannot be overstated, with each community taking pride in its rich cultural heritage, whether expressed through dress, language, or cuisine. This diversity underscores the uniqueness of each group.
In line with this celebration of cultural identity, the Ikwerre people in Rivers State, Nigeria, marked a special occasion known as "Ikwerre Cultural Day," organized by the Ogbakor Ikwerre Cultural Organization Worldwide.
On Saturday, April 6th, 2024, in the city of Port Harcourt, members of this ethnic group gathered en masse to celebrate this biennial event. Distinguished guests included representatives of the state governor, the Minister Of Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, traditional rulers, and well-wishers from various communities.
During his address, Eze Sir Godspower Woke Onuekwa, President-General of the Ogbakor Ikwerre Cultural Organization Worldwide, emphasized the vital role of traditional rulers as custodians and promoters of Nigeria's rich cultural heritage within their domains. He highlighted the significance of events like Ikwerre Cultural Day, designed to sustain and showcase Rivers State's cultural heritage, identity, and values to the world.
According to him, Ikwerre Day serves as an institutionalized cultural festival, fostering homecoming, cultural reflection, and renewal. It aims to assert the community's identity and relevance on the global stage.
Moreover, the celebration promotes unity among the Ikwerre people, fostering a spirit of brotherhood, social cohesion, and cultural understanding. Eze Onuekwa commended the efforts of stakeholders, including the state Governor, His Excellency Simnalayi Fubara, and former Governor turned Minister Of Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Barr. Nyesom Wike, in promoting peace and unity in Rivers State and Nigeria.
The ceremony also witnessed the conferment of the title "Ochi Ohna Ikwerre XIV" upon Prof. Emenike Nyeche Wami, the immediate past President-General of the association, and the presentation of awards to individuals for their outstanding service to the state and nation.
In a brief interview, Eze Prof. Samuel Ugo Onyeka, monarch of Umodiagu kingdom, emphasized the integral connection between culture and societal development. He stressed that fostering enduring cultural values is essential for community development and called for collective efforts to promote peace, unity, and progress.
He commended initiatives like Clevenard.com for showcasing Nigeria and Africa's cultural heritage, which he believes will attract infrastructural development, business, and tourism to the community.
The event concluded with cultural presentations from various ethnic groups and a thrilling display of the traditional "Egelege" wrestling match, showcasing the vibrancy and richness of Ikwerre culture.
