Clevenard Open Project Participates in the Presentation of “Valbanera, El Otro Titanic”
Tenerife, Thursday, September 12, 2024 – Clevenard, represented by Héctor Gómez, took part in the recent presentation of the book “Valbanera, El Otro Titanic”, which highlights the history of migration and the tragic sinking of the ship Valbanera. This maritime disaster, which occurred off the coast of Cuba in 1919, resulted in the loss of 488 lives, making it one of the worst maritime tragedies in peacetime.
The event was held at the Garoe Hall of the Canary Islands Presidency Building in Tenerife. During the presentation, the importance of remembering historical events like the Valbanera tragedy was emphasized, as they offer valuable lessons for understanding current migration challenges. The discussion also explored how various communities have settled in the Canary Islands over time, significantly contributing to the islands’ repopulation and growth. This migration has played a key role in shaping the social and cultural fabric of the region, turning the Canary Islands into a model of integration and diversity.
José Téllez Ledesma, Director General of Migration of the Canary Islands Government, concluded the series of activities marking the 105th anniversary of the Valbanera tragedy and the Islands' Migration Day with the presentation of this important work. The book, written by historian and researcher Mario Luis López Isla, was introduced by Ms. Miossoty de la Caridad Paradelo Martín, Director General of Foreign Relations for the Canary Islands Government.
Key topics addressed during the event included:
- Cultural Diversity: The migration of different communities has enriched the cultural heritage of the Canary Islands, blending traditions, languages, and customs. This diversity is reflected in the local gastronomy, music, and festivals, making the islands a vibrant melting pot of cultures.
- Economic Development: Migrants have contributed significantly to the economic growth of the Canary Islands. Their skills and knowledge have boosted key industries such as agriculture, tourism, and services, strengthening the local economy.
- Demographic Balance: The influx of migrants has helped stabilize the population, particularly during times when emigration from the islands to Latin America and other regions was high. This repopulation has been crucial in maintaining the vitality of local communities.
- Innovation and Education: The diverse origins of migrants have fostered a dynamic environment for innovation and learning. Educational and research institutions in the Canary Islands have benefited from the range of perspectives and experiences brought by these communities.
- Social Integration: Over time, the Canary Islands have become a model of peaceful coexistence and integration among different cultures. This has strengthened the social fabric, promoting inclusivity and unity in the region.
The presentation of “Valbanera, El Otro Titanic” not only commemorated a historical maritime disaster but also provided a platform for reflection on the vital role migration has played in shaping the Canary Islands into a diverse, thriving society.
