Marston Saint Ange
The island of La Digue is mourning the passing of Marston Saint Ange, a remarkable personality and deeply cherished local figure, who passed away early this morning on 16 April 2026 at La Digue Hospital following complications related to ongoing health issues. A small hotel owner with a unique approach to life and business, he leaves behind a legacy defined by his easy-going nature, strong family values, sharp wit, and genuine love for his community.
Born on 26 January 1945, Marston was the kind of person who made everyone feel like an old friend. He carried a warm smile and an easy laugh, always ready to engage in conversation or share a story. People were naturally drawn to his sincerity and his ability to bring others together, whether they were visitors or neighbours. Many guests who stayed at his hotel returned year after year, eventually feeling more like family than tourists. One memorable postcard created by a guest captured his essence perfectly: “If you don’t know this man, you don’t know the Seychelles.”
For decades, Marston stood at the heart of hospitality on La Digue. He ran his beloved small hotel and restaurant, Chez Marston, alongside the Orchid Hotel, owned by his wife Laura, located next door. His restaurant became well known for its traditional Creole buffet, attracting regular excursion groups from across the islands eager to experience his warm hospitality and authentic cuisine.
Family was always central to Marston’s life. He was fiercely loyal to his loved ones and always ready to stand by them when needed. His deep love for his five children—Tony, Karen, Albin, Sophie, and Lucie—was woven into his life’s work. In a touching tribute, he named each of his five hotel rooms after them. In August 2025, Marston celebrated his 80th birthday surrounded by Laura, his children, and many grandchildren, marking a day filled with the togetherness he valued most.
Marston’s journey took him far from home before eventually bringing him back to where he truly belonged. After completing his studies at Seychelles College, he spent 15 years in Melbourne, Australia, living with his mother. In 1978, he returned to Seychelles, drawn by a deep connection to his homeland and particularly to La Digue, where he would go on to leave a lasting legacy.
Deeply engaged with the future of Seychelles, Marston was never afraid to express his views. In 1998, he stood as an Independent Candidate for the La Digue (Inner Islands) elections. Later, in 2011, he announced his intention to run for the Presidency. Although he did not ultimately complete the formal nomination process, he remained actively engaged in public life and proudly expressed his political convictions during election periods.
In addition to his many roles, Marston also had a memorable appearance on screen. In 1985, he featured in the film Robinson Crusoe, which was filmed at Petite Anse and Anse Kerlan. This experience remained a treasured memory, often shared with friends and family, adding another unique dimension to his rich life story.
Marston Saint Ange will be remembered as a man who lived fully, loved deeply, and brought people together. His true legacy lies in the love he gave to his family, the friendships he nurtured, and the countless memories he helped create.
As La Digue bids farewell to one of its most beloved sons, Marston’s spirit will live on in the family he adored, the guests he welcomed, and the vibrant island community he called home.
