Dealing with MUMPS? Don't panic

Dealing with MUMPS? Don't panic

I woke up one beautiful morning to get the kids ready for school and was shocked to see my daughter walked up to me with her face half swollen.

In an instant, I totally forgot school, dressed her up and took her to a pharmacy close by.

The nurse on duty while looking at my daughter from a distance, started dishing out orders to the shop's attendant.

She asked him to get an antibiotic, and couple of other drugs I can't remember and seeing her grim face and the number of drugs increased my fears.

Out of the induced fear, I quickly put a call to my family doctor and after much explanation, he laughed, asked me to drop the drugs, take my daughter home and just administer pain relief.

True to his words, in three days with enough fluids, she was perfectly fine.

As a parent with growing children, you would have experienced my dilemma once in the lives of your kids but believe me, experts says, it's nothing to worry about.

MUMPS

MUMPS according to experts is a contagious and viral infection that causes swelling of the parotid glands in the face.
It is caused by a paramyxovirus and can be transmitted from one person to another via saliva, nasal secretions and close personal contacts.

The condition primarily affects the salivary glands and it's found mostly in children.

It's symptoms includes,
Pains in the swollen salivary glands on one or both sides of the face, pains while chewing or swallowing, fever, headache, weakness of the body and loss of appetite.

TREATMENT..
Experts says there are no recommended medications. Treatment for mumps is focused on relieving symptoms until the body immune system fights off the infection.

They recommends that if you notice this in your child, just give him or her plenty of fluids and if the glands are swollen and causing discomfort, using ice or heat pack will help ease the pains.

According to them antibiotics are not necessary but you can administer non aspirin medications such as ibuprofen to bring fever under control or simply consult a qualified doctor.

As there is no known treatment, there is no known cure for mumps but the infection when managed usually goes away on its own.

So when faced with this situation as a parent, don't panic, just follow the procedures above and be rest assured that in couple of days, it will get cleared.
