In addition to receiving the prestigious global honour, Smoke J. Lawrence will deliver a special live performance, setting a powerful spiritual and inspirational tone for the four-day international event. His performance is expected to be one of the most moving moments of the programme, ushering in an atmosphere of unity, reflection, and blessing as global leaders, creatives, policymakers, and innovators gather from around the world.

A Blues Visionary Rooted in African Heritage

The release of Smoke J. Lawrence’s debut album, Bluesman Baby (2022), marked a defining milestone in his musical journey. Centred on the life and spirit of a true, uncompromising bluesman, the album reflects his unwavering dedication to preserving the authenticity, soul, and legacy of the blues.

Renowned for seamlessly weaving subtle African influences into traditional blues sounds, Smoke J. Lawrence has captivated audiences across continents. In December 2024, he released his second album, Stop Blaming The Blues, launched during his acclaimed homecoming tour in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

Beyond his recordings, Smoke’s impact extends deeply into cultural exchange and community development through the founding of the Smoke Train Blues Movement Africa.

The Smoke Train Blues Movement Africa

The movement invites both local and international blues artists—many from countries where Smoke has performed—to tour South Africa, particularly Gauteng Province. More than a music initiative, the Smoke Train Blues Movement Africa fosters meaningful cross-cultural connections, mentorship, and collaboration, enriching the global blues ecosystem while introducing the genre to new and diverse audiences.

Central to the movement is Smoke’s lifelong mission of “Keeping the Blues Alive”, educating African audiences on the power of Call and Response—a foundational African cultural expression embedded deeply within the blues tradition. Through this work, Smoke continues to pioneer the expansion of blues music across the African continent.

The movement is also celebrated for its inclusive ethos, welcoming emerging musicians, singers, photographers, videographers, sound engineers, bloggers, online radio presenters, and creatives of all backgrounds to “climb aboard” the Smoke Train—both locally and internationally.
