Clevenard is proud to announce that Sibongile Winnie Mavimbela, a distinguished South African environmental expert, climate diplomat, and human rights advocate, will be a headline speaker and award recipient at the Clevenard Open Project 2026, taking place 27–30 August 2026 in Alicante, Spain.
This historic global gathering will bring together world leaders, policymakers, investors, creatives, innovators, academics, and change-makers from across continents. She will speak at the event and receive a prestigious award in recognition of her exceptional contribution to environmental governance, climate justice, gender equality, sustainable development, and human rights advocacy.

As part of her distinguished participation at the Clevenard Open Project 2026, Sibongile Winnie Mavimbela will deliver two high-level keynote addresses across the first two days of the summit, reflecting her more than two decades of leadership in environmental diplomacy, education, policy development, and global negotiations.

In this keynote, Sibongile Winnie Mavimbela will address the intersection of climate change, gender equality, economic development, and justice. She will highlight the importance of gender-responsive climate policy, inclusive economic frameworks, and sustainable investment strategies that ensure equitable participation of women and vulnerable communities in national, regional, and global economies.
About Sibongile Winnie Mavimbela
Sibongile Winnie Mavimbela is a South African environmental expert with over 20 years of experience in the environmental sector, including more than 12 years focused on environmental and climate diplomacy and international relations, particularly within global negotiations.
She has served the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Secretariat and its 16 Member States since 2012, bringing a wealth of global, continental, and regional experience and networks. She holds a Master’s Degree in Environmental Sciences, aligned with her long-standing environmental and social activism.
Mavimbela is a trained and experienced international negotiator for several United Nations Conventions and Multilateral Environmental Agreements. Since 2003, she has organised and facilitated technical forums, working groups, training workshops, symposia, conferences, Councils, Summits, and Conferences of the Parties (COPs). Over the past two decades, she has facilitated the development and approval of more than 20 continental and regional policies, protocols, strategies, programmes, and guidelines.
Her leadership spans middle and senior management, project management, policy development, and strategy formulation, with over 20 years of leadership experience. She is actively involved in multilateral negotiations, ministerial engagements, council and summit decision-making processes, and public–private sector dialogues.
Her extensive board memberships and affiliations include advisory and leadership roles with Peace Parks Foundation, International Solid Waste Association – Africa Chapter, African Integrated Air Pollution and Climate Change Assessment, African Restoration Network / Society for Ecological Restoration (SER), Women for the Environment (WE Africa), UNEP Major Groups and Stakeholders – Africa, and numerous regional and global environmental and governance networks.
In 2025, she was honoured as an Ambassador for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and received the Lifetime Achiever Award as a leading Environmental Practitioner from the Environmental Assessment Practitioners Association of South Africa (EAPASA).
She is also a Co-founder and Non-Executive Director of the LETFU-SONKHE Institute of Strategic Thinking and Development, Eswatini’s advisory centre for strategic governance and policy development. Through this platform, she has facilitated national dialogue processes, supported victims of political violence, mobilised humanitarian resources, and contributed to democratic governance initiatives across Southern Africa.
As a social activist and human rights defender, Mavimbela has played a pivotal role in advocacy, peace-building, and justice initiatives, including Women, Peace and Security (WPS) programmes, gender-based violence prevention, and climate-conflict resolution training across the SADC region.
She is a global voice for climate justice and gender equality, having chaired the Climate Change–Gender Stream at COP26 in Glasgow, spoken at major continental summits including the Africa Green Economy Summit, and facilitated gender-responsive climate finance and policy dialogues across Africa.
