A New Model for Africa–Africa Cooperation: Egypt and Burkina Faso Deepen Economic Ties

MAG Trade & Investment and the National Office for Major Projects of Burkina Faso (BN-GPB) signed a Memorandum of Understanding today, January 16, in the Burkinabé capital, Ouagadougou. The signing took place at the conclusion of a week-long working visit by a MAG Trade & Investment delegation, which included a series of meetings with senior officials, ministers, and Burkinabé officials involved in the country’s comprehensive development process. The visit also featured several technical meetings with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Grain and Agricultural Crops Storage Authority, the National Electricity Company, and other government bodies, public institutions, and representative entities, in addition to representatives of the private sector, Burkinabé business leaders, and major companies operating across various development sectors.

These meetings were arranged by the Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Burkina Faso, in cooperation and coordination with the National Office for Major Projects.

The mission reflected MAG Trade & Investment’s approach to working in Burkina Faso, which is based on a partnership model, joint capacity building, and the exchange of knowledge and expertise, alongside economic and trade engagement. Discussions focused on exploring potential avenues for cooperation aligned with Burkina Faso’s national priorities for sustainable and inclusive development, particularly in the sectors of energy, food security and agriculture, health, digital transformation and information and communications technology (ICT), housing and real estate development, and infrastructure development.

In this context, the meeting with the Minister of Health addressed ways to support the development of the health sector through the exchange of expertise, institutional cooperation, and leveraging the experience of a select group of Egyptian medical experts and specialists who were part of the Egyptian delegation during the visit to Ouagadougou. This underscored the importance that the Egyptian government and private sector attach to Africa–Africa cooperation and South–South cooperation, through various public–private partnership (PPP) models, in pursuit of development objectives and the interests of both countries and their peoples.

This initiative reflects the strength of the fraternal relations and historical ties between the Arab Republic of Egypt and Burkina Faso, and their alignment with the strategic orientations expressed by His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, and His Excellency Captain Ibrahim Traoré, President of the Republic of Burkina Faso. It also comes within the context of sustained political and diplomatic momentum between the two countries, and as a continuation of the visit of H.E. Dr. Badr Abdel Aaty, Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, to Ouagadougou in July 2025, as well as his ongoing meetings and telephone communications with Mr. Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Burkina Faso—the most recent of which took place last week—to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation, particularly in the economic and trade fields, and to encourage private-sector stakeholders in both countries in recognition of their vital role in achieving renaissance and comprehensive development.

The aforementioned Memorandum of Understanding constitutes a practical and positive framework for continuing dialogue, coordination, and cooperation between the public and private sectors, particularly within African countries.

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Ms. Nancy Abdelhadi, Executive Vice President of the economic group of businessman Mohamed Atta Gad, representing MAG Trade & Investment, and on the Burkinabé side by Professor Hamidou Sawadogo, Executive Director of the National Office for Major Projects of Burkina Faso.
