About Dr. Duma Ndlovu
Dr. Duma Ndlovu is one of South Africa’s most influential creative voices, with a distinguished career spanning nearly five decades across journalism, theatre, film, and television.
He began his professional journey as a journalist in South Africa in the 1970s, where he reported on pivotal historical moments, including the 1976 Soweto Uprisings. In 1977, he went into exile in Lesotho before receiving a scholarship to study in the United States. He later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hunter College, City University of New York.
In the early 1980s, Dr. Ndlovu emerged as a key figure in international theatre. He worked with Lincoln Center Theatre in New York, where he produced the influential Woza Africa Theatre Festival, widely credited with igniting international interest in South African theatre and arts during the 1980s. His theatre credits include associate producing roles on acclaimed productions such as Woza Albert, Asinamali, and Sarafina, all of which enjoyed successful runs on and off Broadway in the United States.
Upon returning to South Africa in 1992, Dr. Ndlovu founded Word of Mouth Pictures, a television production company that has played a transformative role in shaping the country’s broadcast landscape. Through this company, he has created and produced some of South Africa’s most iconic and long-running television productions, including Muvhango, Imbewu, Uzalo, Umkhokha, Sibongile and the Dlamini’s, My Brother’s Keeper, Komkhulu, Ehostela, and Queen Modjadji.
In addition to television, Dr. Ndlovu has written and directed numerous acclaimed stage productions, including Bergville Stories, The Game, The Ritual, The Journey, Sheila’s Day, and The Revival of Gibson Kente’s How Long. Many of these works have toured extensively across the United States, Europe, and Switzerland.
In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the arts and cultural development, Dr. Ndlovu received an Honorary Doctoral Degree in English from the University of Venda in 2011, followed by an Honorary PhD from the University of Ongoye, Zululand, in 2022.
His legacy is defined by powerful storytelling that foregrounds African narratives, cultural identity, and social transformation, making his headline lecture a defining moment of the 2026 programme.
