Born on 8 November 1975 in Meadowlands Zone 4, Soweto, Lena Mdakane’s journey is one of resilience, vision, and deep faith. Raised by her mother, grandmother, and stepfather, she credits her family and community for instilling the values of hard work, perseverance, and compassion. Coming from a strong musical family background, Lena’s mother and uncles were singers, and from the age of 12 she began performing in school competitions, choirs, and worship teams—dreaming of one day performing on big stages with Gospel music.

Her Musical Journey

With determination and faith, Lena transformed her childhood dream into a professional career. In 2020 she released her first EP Ngwe Kupeleka Malenas Life Alone, followed by a powerful live launch. She established Malenas Music Empire, assembled a band, backing vocalists, and dancers, and began to shape a distinct Gospel sound.

Her artistry quickly earned recognition:

• 2021: Released music video Umnati Okhwalayo, which won two Eminent Video Music Awards (Best Art Directed Video and Best Directed Video).
• 2023: Released EP Thandaza, winning Best Traditional Album (Ingoma Music Awards 2023) and Best Indie Album (2024).
• 2024: Produced a live recording Testimony and released the single I Am Free, further cementing her influence in Gospel music.

Beyond music, Lena is the founder of Malenas Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting rape survivors, women, and youth.
