Collins Brian A. Pratt – “De Champ”: A Life in Music
Collins Brian Adeyebokun Pratt, known artistically as “De Champ,” has spent over five decades shaping the global music industry and enriching communities across Sierra Leone, the UK, and beyond. His remarkable journey spans classical, gospel, and secular music, demonstrating extraordinary versatility as a musician, composer, producer, educator, mentor, and cultural ambassador.
Early Musical Journey
At just 13 years old, Collins began as an organist at Buxton Methodist Church in Freetown and played a key role in the Prince of Wales School Brass Band, where he still performs today as its oldest member. From those formative years, his music became not just a passion but a lifelong mission to uplift, inspire, and pass down tradition to the next generation.
Musical Growth in the UK
Moving to the UK in 1982, Collins became a sought-after church organist, most prominently at Walworth Methodist Church in Southwark. His influence quickly expanded to the wider Sierra Leonean community in London, where he earned recognition as one of the most in-demand organists.
Innovation: From Engineering to DJing
A qualified electronic engineer, Collins combined his technical and artistic talents to become one of London’s leading African DJs, bringing joy to countless cultural gatherings and solidifying his reputation as a pioneer of African diasporic music culture.
Recording Career & International Tours
His debut album, Feeling Good (1989), and follow-up works including We Nor Go Tire, captivated audiences worldwide. With a career spanning nearly two decades of tours across Europe, the UK, the USA, and Sierra Leone, Collins cemented his place as one of Sierra Leone’s enduring music legends. His gospel album E Go Well With the Righteous (1998) became a source of comfort during the Sierra Leone rebel war, spreading hope across continents, from West Africa to the Caribbean.
Mentorship, Teaching & Community Leadership
Beyond performance, Collins is deeply committed to mentorship and education. He has worked with icons such as King Masco, Bunny Mack, SE Rogie, and Dr. Oloh, while nurturing emerging talents in Freetown and London. In 2007, he founded the Dechamp Music Academy and a youth brass band in London, training and mentoring countless young musicians who continue to shine at major cultural events.
He later extended this vision to Sierra Leone, establishing a Music Academy for disadvantaged youth, ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent access to musical education.
Recognition & Legacy
Collins’s dedication has earned him global respect. In 2019, he was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to music and the Sierra Leonean community in the UK. He also founded the Voices of Sierra Leone choir, uniting diverse talents in London and bringing Sierra Leonean culture to the international stage.
His legacy continues through his family: his daughter, a BBC Radio DJ in London, and his son, a gifted saxophonist, both carry forward his passion for music.
Award Nomination
For his lifelong contributions to music, cultural preservation, mentorship, and community empowerment, Collins Brian Adeyebokun Pratt has been nominated for the Clevenard Media Award 2025 in the category of Lifetime Achievement in Music, Mentorship & Cultural Legacy.
