Nigeria's Federal Government Partners with UNESCO on Gender Equality on Education

The Federal Ministry of Education in collaboration with UNESCO’s International Institute for Educational Planning (UNESCO-IIEP), and Gender at the Center Initiative (GCI) organized a 5-day capacity-building workshop for gender desk officers and other elated officers drawn from six selected states of Abia, Bauchi, Delta, Kebbi, Kogi, and Ogun for improved gender equality in education at state level.

Speaking at the opening of the workshop, Minister of State for Education, Yusuf Tanko Sununu, acknowledged that gender-related matters required specialist knowledge which could only be acquired. He also added that this was so that improved inclusive education could be obtained.

Head of UNESCO office in Nigeria, Abdourahmane Diallo, said UNESCO was interested in how member states would track gender issues particularly in the education sector while Senior Gender and Education Specialist, UNESCO-IIEP, Sally Rosscornes said UNESCO was interested in accompanying states to see how they understood different gender inequalities, disparities, and dimensions within their own context and then develop their own solutions.
