UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE OF MOZAMBIQUE ISLAND remains a key USP for Mozambique says Alain St.Ange

Mozambique Island remains a pivotal USP (unique selling point) for Mozambique, having opened its doors to tourism, even establishing a bridge connecting it to the mainland. This historical island, once the capital of Mozambique, holds UNESCO World Heritage Site status and requires preservation, as emphasized by Alain St. Ange following his visit in early March.

"I first encountered this remarkable island in 1973, marking my inaugural journey beyond Seychelles after completing my studies at Seychelles College. Returning to Mozambique Island in 2024 was truly nostalgic," shared St. Ange, who was delivering a lecture aboard a luxury liner during its stopover at Mozambique Island.

"Today, Mozambique Island boasts a bridge linking it to the mainland, signaling a significant stride into the realm of tourism. Gisela Matavel Antman, a dynamic Mozambican tourism entrepreneur, plays a pivotal role in ensuring that tourism remains firmly rooted in local hands. As a co-owner of Villa Sands, one of the island's premier resorts featuring an authentic seaside restaurant offering delectable seafood delights, Gisela, along with her Swedish-born husband—who also operate a tour operator business in Maputo—takes pride in fostering the island's tourism development while championing local artists as benefactors, aiming to sustain youth employment and preserve Mozambique Island's culture," added Alain St. Ange.

Nonetheless, Mozambique Island must heed the lessons learned from other tourism-centric island destinations. The island's government or local administration must take immediate action to revitalize dilapidated historical buildings, preserving their architectural integrity and reinstating a sense of care and attention to the island. While the island holds immense potential for upscale tourism, it requires more individuals like Gisela Matavel Antman to propel its tourism industry forward. Mozambique Island remains a cornerstone USP for Mozambique, deserving of a little extra care and attention.
