Narrowing The Yawning Gap Between Government And The People: The Kebbi Example.

The popular BBC Hausa program “A fada a cika,” which was held in Kebbi state on New Year's Day, has shed light on the progressive and empathetic approach of Governor Nasir Idris towards governance. As an individual who is just seven months into his tenure, his willingness to participate in the program and address the concerns of ordinary citizens reflects his deep-rooted commitment to democratic principles and the welfare of the people.

The program has proven to be an effective platform for bringing governance closer to the grassroots, allowing the common people to engage directly with their governor and inquire about the government's plans for them. Governor Nasir Idris' active involvement in the town hall meeting showcased his confidence in the ethos of democracy and his dedication to prioritizing the needs and voices of the masses.

One of the most significant outcomes of the program is Governor Idris’ response to public demand by sending an executive bill to the state House of Assembly, seeking approval to establish the Commission for Persons with Disability in Kebbi state. This initiative is aimed at addressing the interests of people with disabilities and creating opportunities for them to pursue education and become self-sufficient members of society, rather than relying on begging to sustain themselves. Furthermore, the governor’s decision to appoint five persons with disabilities as special advisers and assistants demonstrates his commitment to integrating them into mainstream society.

It is noteworthy that in Kebbi state, there are individuals with disabilities who have acquired education at first and second degrees levels, making them equally capable of assuming leadership roles. The forthcoming Commission for Persons with Disability, where PWD will form a significant portion of the staff, underscores Governor Nasir Idris’ inclusive and progressive approach to governance. His proactive measures to empower and uplift marginalized communities project him as a leader who is deeply attuned to the aspirations and needs of the people. His populist method has effectively closed the gap between the Kebbi state government and the people of the state especially the group of citizens who could not, ordinarily have access to him.

During the BBC Hausa program, Governor Idris attentively listened to the concerns raised by ordinary citizens and responded to their pleas with tangible promises. For instance, he pledged to construct a well-equipped clinic in Tarasa village within a short period, addressing the absence of essential healthcare facilities in the vicinity. Similarly, in response to the demands of residents in Bayan Kara, Bayan Filin Sukuwa, Bayan Oando, and Ruggar Fulani, the governor vowed to address the lack of access to medical care, particularly maternity services, by establishing a clinic in their areas.

In another instance, casual staff of the state hospital expressed grievances regarding the non-confirmation of their employment status after 18 years of service. Governor Nasir Idris’ concern at this revelation and his prompt directive for their confirmation underscore his commitment to ensuring fairness and justice within the state administration.

Furthermore, the governor demonstrated his understanding of the challenges faced by farmers, particularly the high cost of petrol which was impacting negatively on food production and security. Responding to this issue, he announced government's procurement of solar-powered pump machines to be distributed to farmers, aimed at reducing their reliance on petrol and subsequently lowering agricultural production costs. This initiative reflects the governor’s proactive stance in addressing agricultural challenges and promoting sustainable farming practices.

In conclusion, Governor Nasir Idris' participation in the BBC Hausa program and his subsequent actions portray him as a leader whose politics is deeply rooted in serving and uplifting the masses. His genuine engagement with the concerns of ordinary citizens, coupled with concrete initiatives to address pressing issues, underscores his commitment to inclusive governance and sustainable development in Kebbi state.
There’s indeed a new dawn in Kebbi state which fast rising from the ashes of governance of mediocrity, underdevelopment, infrastructure decay and low morale amongst its citizenry.
