How Much Do You Know About Oil Seals?

Oil seals are known by many names such as shaft seals, dirt seals, grease seals, lip seals and many other variants of these. They are essentially simple devices used in rotating shaft equipment to prevent lubricants from escaping and to remove contaminants such as dust, dirt and water. The most important function of oil seals, however, is to protect the various ball, sleeve and roller bearings in rotary shafts. The seals also prevent the fusion of two different fluids (e.g. oil and water) that should not be mixed.

The "dynamic seal" is the relationship between the rotating shaft and the seal and is handled by the sealing element. A clamping spring can be used in the oil seal to increase the radial interference between the seal lip and the shaft contact point. In order to achieve this interference, the inner diameter of the oil seal must be slightly smaller than the diameter of the shaft.

The "static seal" is the relationship between the housing and the seal. To achieve this interference, the outer diameter of the oil seal must be slightly larger than the diameter of the housing or bore.

An oil seal usually consists of three basic components: the sealing element, the metal housing and the spring. The function of the sealing element is to stop the leakage of fluid between the shaft and the housing. The metal housing will provide stiffness and strength to the seal when it is fixed in the bore or recess. The spring will help to make the sealing element more effective. All materials must be selected according to the environment in which the oil seal will operate.

Endless customisation options

In addition to the standard oil seals available, manufacturers also offer customisation options. You can customise oil seals in any material (listed in the previous article), shape, size, housing design, spring position, spring tension, primary and secondary lip geometry, etc. In addition, oil seals can be customised to include specific characteristics such as

Flexural resistance

Electrical insulation

Electromagnetic interference shielding

Protection against electromagnetic (EMI) interference.

Non-flammable

Heat dissipation and heat reflection

Resistant to abrasion, acids, alkalis, corrosion, oil, salt, etc.

Storage of Oil Seals

Handling Oil seals must be handled and stored carefully to prevent oil leakage and to ensure the intended performance when used in the application. The following regulations must be strictly observed when storing, handling and transporting oil seals.

Store the seals in an air-conditioned room (room temperature max 30°C).

Avoid storing oil seals in direct sunlight. Always store them in sealed containers to protect them from dust, solvents and other contaminants.

When transporting oil seals, do not stack them to avoid excessive impact. Deformation may occur in such cases.

Use only paraffin to clean the seals. Other corrosive fluids and industrial cleaners are not recommended.

Brief description of oil seal lubrication

When oil seals are located near the bearing being lubricated, they receive adequate lubrication from the bearing. If these seals are used to seal water, they will still be adequately lubricated. In non-lubricated applications, extra effort must be put into lubricating the seals.

Double seals are often used in such applications as they are pre-filled with grease between the sealing edges. When using double seals, extra care must be taken during installation to avoid pressure due to the grease. Lubrication is therefore very important for oil seals, during operation and assembly, as it helps to avoid frictional losses and ensures proper heat dissipation between the lubricated edges.

With this basic understanding of oil seals, you are sure to make an informed purchasing decision. It is best to address your concerns and questions from the manufacturer in order to make an informed purchase, Sanshi Rubber is one of the leading manufacturers of custom specification oil seals.
