Palma de Mallorca, Spain — For the first time, the vibrant Mediterranean city of Palma de Mallorca will host the Clevenard Media Award 2025, spotlighting excellence in entertainment, entrepreneurship, innovation, fashion, and community empowerment. This landmark event unites visionary entrepreneurs, creatives, NGOs, government leaders, and changemakers from across the globe to honor individuals transforming society through leadership, courage, and dedication.
Among this year’s distinguished nominees is Dr. Imambay Kadie Kamara, an internationally recognized advocate for the rights of women, girls, and persons with disabilities. A mother of six and grandmother of five, Dr. Kamara’s journey reflects extraordinary resilience. Having endured civil war, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), domestic abuse, and the deep societal stigma of disability, she transformed personal pain into a lifelong mission to challenge injustice and uplift the vulnerable.
Early Life & Education
Born in Guinea and raised in Sierra Leone, Dr. Kamara is of proud heritage—her father, a Guinean of the Susu and Madingo tribes, and her late mother, a Sierra Leonean from the Eku Creole tribe in Forabay, Eastern Freetown. Raised single-handedly by her disabled mother, Haja Fatima Saptieu Badara Thorpe, Dr. Kamara witnessed first-hand the impact of discrimination and hardship, shaping her compassion and determination to become a global voice for the marginalized.
Fleeing the Sierra Leonean civil war, she relocated to the UK in 1991, continuing her studies at Lewisham College and the University of London, later earning an Honorary Doctorate in Humanitarianism from the Global International Alliance University (GIA), Atlanta, USA.
Foundations & Humanitarian Impact
Dr. Kamara is the founder and president of two influential organizations:
- Disabled International Foundation UK/Sierra Leone (DIF UK/SL) — Established in 2001 in honor of her late mother, advocating for the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities.
- Dr. Imambay Kamara Global Humanitarian Foundation — Launched on World Mental Health Day in 2021, supporting vulnerable women, girls, and marginalized communities worldwide.
Under her leadership, these organizations have:
- Constructed three primary schools, including the Dr. Imambay Kamara International Academy for Vulnerable Children in Sierra Leone.
- Established the Dr. Imambay Kamara Children’s Orphanage Home in Lungi.
- Created a Beauty Leisure Centre and Boutique for women’s trauma recovery and job training.
- Delivered humanitarian aid during crises, including Ebola and COVID-19.
- Distributed disability aids, school supplies, food, and clothing to orphans, widows, disabled persons, and the elderly.
Policy & Advocacy
Dr. Kamara has been instrumental in advancing disability rights in Sierra Leone. In 2011, her organization helped enforce the Disability Act, resulting in the historic appointment of a disabled government minister. By 2014, her collaborations with Handicap International and other partners contributed to the creation of the National Disability Commission and expanded free healthcare access for pregnant women and lactating mothers.
She continues to campaign globally for employment, accessibility, inclusive education, and political representation for persons with disabilities while working with groups like Disability UK, Humanity and Inclusion, and the Commonwealth Entrepreneurs Club.
A survivor of FGM and early domestic abuse, Dr. Kamara is also a powerful campaigner against early child marriage, gender-based violence, and harmful cultural practices. As a UK signatory to the International FGM Policy (2014), she collaborates with policymakers worldwide to protect girls and support survivors.
Recognition & Global Influence
Dr. Kamara’s exceptional contributions have earned her international acclaim, including:
- Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award (President Joe Biden, USA) – first Sierra Leonean recipient.
- Global Humanitarian Award – Cannes Film Festival, France.
- Named among the 100 Most Successful Women in the World and the 50 Most Influential Women in Sierra Leone.
- Honored in the British Parliament and invited to a Royal Reception at St James’s Palace (2024) by King Charles III and Queen Camilla.
- Numerous honorary awards for her humanitarian service across 44 countries.
She also serves as:
- Director of Gender and Equality, West Africa Youth Empowerment.
- Member of Giving Women Switzerland, Global Society for Female Entrepreneurs (USA), International Women’s Peace Group (IWPG), and Global Peace Ambassador for the Universal Peace Federation UK.
A sought-after speaker, mentor, and author, Dr. Kamara has appeared at summits in Geneva, London (Chatham House), and other global forums. She has co-authored four best-selling books, including The 100 Most Successful Women in the World, and is preparing to release her autobiography, Walking in My Mother’s Shoes (with the chapter “Silence No More”).
Legacy & Future
Celebrating 25 years of humanitarian service in 2025, Dr. Kamara continues to lead agricultural and youth empowerment projects, festive aid initiatives, and global advocacy efforts — honoring a promise made to her mother: to fight stigma, end discrimination, and uplift those forgotten by society.
