He helped his family appreciate that “Knowing where you come from helps to better understand who you are” as is said, and this is why he personally always wanted his family to concentrate time and energy in understanding their roots, and in doing so, learning about their extended family. He always emphasized that honoring them is by remembering them and that this was the greatest gift that we can leave for each and every member of our family.
To care for those who once cared for us is the highest honor in life said Tia Walker, we should never forget the hands that raised us.
Today, the 31st of December, as we mark your birthday once again, we are reminded of his own parents, grandparents, and great grandparents: -
Charles Marie St.Ange (son of Thimotée St.Ange and Laurencia Flippenta Zoe, a slave who was freed in Seychelles) and of his wife Aimee Mercy St.Ange née Harrison – Worsencroft (daughter of Samuel Worsencroft and a freed slave, Francoise Harrison), parents of Charles Samuel St.Ange who married Claire Marie Antoinette Simeon, the daughter of Rosine Vincent and of Ernest Simeon. They, in turn, are the parents of Hermand Kersley St.Ange who married Josephine Merienne Mellon of La Digue the daughter of Marie Lapetite Mellon & Auguste Levy who are the mother and father of our dear Karl St.Ange - born on 31st December 1919, and who married Violette Germaine de Charmoy Lablache, the daughter of Marie Violette Daisy de Charmoy Lablache and Arthur Savy.
Karl St.Ange, a La Digue Island farmer, joined politics in early 1964 and became the sitting elected Member for La Digue of the Governing Council and Legislative Assembly in 1967, and again in 1970. He lost in the 1974 La Digue elections and the Praslin 1976 Bye-Elections. He became a government minister in 1979 in the Second Republic’s Cabinet of Ministers holding the portfolio of Agriculture and later, Health.
He passed away at his home in La Digue on 7th May 2009.
After his death, a commemorative book of the life of Karl St.Ange was published in 2011 with ISBN number 978-0-9871458-1-9. The book entitled “Seychelles Remembers Karl St.Ange” was an attempt to place on record who Karl St.Ange was, through a collection of pictures supplied by family members and by the many friends of this great man.
Today, the 31st of December, we mark his birthday once again as the family does every year with the words “We miss you and say we love you dearly”.
