Edo 2024: Chief Tom Ikimi Makes Case For Edo Central... Amb. Tony Okonigene

Sir Chief Tom Ikhimi is a former Nigerian Minister for foreign Affairs. He was also a former National Chairman of National Republican Congress(NRC), one of the two political parties formed by General Ibrahim Babangida during his transitional program. He is a man that has paid his dues in the political landscape of Edo State and indeed Nigeria.

Chief Tom Ikhimi has been in the forefront of those canvassing for power to be ceded to the Edo Central by the Edo South and Edo North Senatorial Districts. He opined that the other two Senatorial Districts owe it as a mark of honour and fairness to support the Edo Central Senatorial District to produce the next governor of Edo State in 2024.

Addressing a cross section of PDP faithful members recently in Igueben, Chief Ikhimi recalled how the late Admiral Augustus Aikhomu, the then military vice President of Nigeria, unilaterally carved out Edo State out of the old Bendel State . He noted ; " I was in the parlour of my late friend, Admiral Augustus Aikhomu when he put the map of Bendel state on his table and carved out the present Edo State. Admiral and Chief Anenih were influential enough in the PDP to have given the ticket to an Esan man in 1999 but they supported Lucky Igbinedion from the South.

" Last month I attended a banquet organized by Governor Godwin Obaseki, where all the past governors of Edo State were honoured. When I looked at all the past and present governors, I saw Lucky Igbinedion and Governor Obaseki from Edo South. I saw Adams Oshiomole from Edo North. Non of them even had a deputy from Edo Central. I felt sad and marginalized as an Esan man"

The above narratives from Chief Tom Ikhimi, summarize the state of political affairs in Edo State today. Every state stands on a tripod ( 3 Senatorial Districts). The Edo Central Senatorial District has not had the opportunity to legitimately occupy the seat of power in Edo State.

In 2024, the Edo South and Edo North Senatorial Districts owe the people of Edo Central that moral responsibility to support an Edo Governor of Esan extraction. It is the right thing to do.
