THE 'WHY' OF DELEGATION OF DUTIES

THE 'WHY' OF DELEGATION OF DUTIES

Many business owners have strong tendencies towards 'do it yourself' This is quite understandable and admirable, besides without these instincts you would be unlikely to ever meet up in business yourself. However there is a negative side to this decision or trait, we see a great deal of systematic underdelegation of duties at work or business.

This is very wasteful in many ways: the business owners are doing things that others could do and at the same time too busy to do things that only the person in that position may be able to do.

yes! This was my attitude when l first started my fashion business (Ebi-bellas Fashion in 2008) I did almost everything myself and discovered l wasn't as productive as l should if l had delegated duties to capable hands. until l discovered l could excel and grow with having people who could do the job and learned more than when l did it myself.

let's go further, What stops you from delegating?

There are many reasons why business owners fail to delegate.it is very important to know what stops you so that you can change and unleash the real potential in your business like l did in my fashion business ( Ebi-bellas fashion place)

  1. I prefer 'doing' to managing because l understand it better.
  2. I can do the work better than they can.
  3. I don't know how to delegate.
  4. It is easier and faster to do it myself
  5. We cannot afford to make mistakes. These were what l thought about when l started my fashion business because l understand my Clients better and l know what they wanted, so l do not think anyone can do it better than l could do..(That is not true)

sometimes we blame the people around us for our lack of delegation: such as

  • My employees lack experience
  • My employees are overloaded
  • My employees resist responsibility.
  • My employees avoid risk.
  • My clients expects me to do important things personally.
  • My employees can't be trusted to work on their own.
  • We are understaffed.

whatever your excuses are, under delegation needs to be sorted out as it will choke your business and prevent it from growing just like l did when l started...but am happy today, that my fashion business is no longer how it used to be.

The 'why?' of delegation

Sometimes we assign a low priority to delegation because we are unsure of how to go about it and may be overwhelmed by the situation we find our business in. The following are some of the benefits of delegating :

so take time to find out which of these you would like to achieve for yourself and your business.

  1. More can be achieved - deadlines are easier to meet.
  2. Employees become more involved and committed.
  3. Employees grow and develop
  4. people are better utilised and there is greater productivity.
  5. Individual performance can be measured more accurately.
  6. A diversity of products, operations, and people can be managed effectively.
  7. Employee recognition and satisfaction can be enhanced.
  8. The manager/director has time for planning, organizing, motivating, and monitoring.
  9. The manager has time for leading: communicating, conversing, developing, and nurturing great people.

We shall be looking into the HOW TO DELEGATE in our next episode.....
