IOM ENGAGES EDO GOVERNMENT TO ASSIST VULNERABLE GROUPS IN COMMUNITIES TO ADDRESS MENTAL HEALTH.

Building on existing efforts, the Edo State Government is partnering with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) to curtail irregular migration to its barest minimum and equip vulnerable persons in the area of Mental Health and Psychosocial balance.

At a stakeholder’s engagement on dialogue validation involving the International Organisation for Migration, the State Ministry of Arts, Culture and Tourism and Igueben community, participants recommended the need to organize events such as cultural festivals that would engage vulnerable group of communities in Edo State.

The meeting which held in the palace of the Onojie of Igueben, HRH Ehisogie Eluojierior 1, was to identify to goals and priorities to address Mental Health and provide support service needs based on the result of an assessment conducted by IOM in Edo.

The outreach of the International Organisation for Migration through validation is to among other goals activate a commitment to get the people closer to their culture and seek cultural ways to solve mental health and psychosocial issues.

Here in Edo State, the Governor Obaseki led government has sustained a mix of strategies, ranging from institutional, sensitization campaign, reintegration of returnees and empowerment programmes amongst others in tackling the menace with efforts being the made to ensure the eradication of the scourge from the country as perpetrators are leaving Edo State to other parts of the country to continue their practice.

The stakeholder’s meeting attended by the Secretary to the Onojie of Igueben, officials of both IOM and the State Ministry of Arts, Culture and Tourism was an opportunity for the locals to call on the Ministry to support them in organizing the Igueben Day and assist in reviving their age long cultural practices to avoid extinction.

The Ministry on its part assured the Igueben people of technical support and attend the proposed Igueben Cultural Day scheduled tentatively for 29th December 2023 and will feature moonlight stories and games, cultural songs and dances, traditional food display, quiz competition, indigenous poem recitation, pageantry (Mr. & MISS. IGUEBEN) and sports competition (football).
