The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum presents a complete overview of Ukraine modern art in the early 20th century, showing the different artistic trends that took place.

The modernist movement in Ukraine unfolded against a complicated socio-political backdrop of collapsing empires, wars and revolutions, with the war of independence of Ukraine and the eventual establishment of Soviet Ukraine. Despite these tragic circumstances and ruthless Stalinist repressions against Ukrainian intelligentsia, Ukrainian art of the period lived through a true renaissance of creative experimentation. The exhibition reclaims this essential -though little-known- chapter of Western modernism, displaying around 70 works ranging from paintings to sketches, collages and theatre designs.

This is the most comprehensive study of Ukrainian modern art to date, including works by its main representatives and showing the full range of styles and trends- from figurative art to futurism or constructivism.
